Although our Memorial Day weekend was consumed with last minute preparations for our relocation, we did carve out time to visit with friends. We are fortunate to have met some really good people and look forward to visiting with them in the future.
On Saturday morning, we relocated the rig to our property. I’d like to say that it all went smoothly, but I’d be lying.
I’ll just say that it took longer than we anticipated and we were all grateful when the task was finally complete. We drove north and spent the night in Cordele, GA.
We continued on our journey the next morning, thinking our timing was perfect. Then it happened. We got the “stop safely” notice on the truck console as the motor lost power. This happened to us when we were relocating from Texas to Florida at the end of January (http://rau.typepad.com/ginasjewels/2011/01/index.html). Broken down on the side of the road in Kentucky, Stephan immediately started working on a solution. Using a technique that we learned from the diesel mechanic from the previous incident, we were able to get the truck running again. Unfortunately, it was only temporary. When we lost power the second time, we were able to coast into a parking lot right off the freeway. After many telephone calls, we came to terms with the reality we would not be able to get help until after the holiday.
Fortunately, we were stranded outside Paducah’s Best Western which happened to have a room available. I’ll spare you the details because I just don’t want to relive the stress during the next few days. We were not able to get a room at a pet friendly hotel so we had to hide our precious little “barks a lot”. After giving Ford more money for another faulty sensor and unacceptable customer service, we were able to continue our journey on Wednesday afternoon. I had lost sight of my “joyful” heart on Sunday and by Wednesday was about ready to throw myself out on the freeway (southbound to FL, of course). It has to get better, right?
We arrived at our new home around 5pm and the movers started unloading the “time capsule” at 7 pm. It wasn’t long before the apartment was filled with all our stuff (dust, mold, and moth ball smell included). Our “big bed” never felt so good. We slept hard until it was time for Stephan to head into work – a few days late. His boss, Ken, was very understanding which reminded us how blessed we are that Stephan actually likes the people he is working with.
Wagner and I had plenty of unpacking to tend to during Stephan’s workday. Did I mention that I caught a cold? Perhaps it was when I was sitting on the curb outside the gas station (next to some empty beer bottles and Vienna sausage cans) waiting for Stephan? Yep, there I was all dressed up in a cute sundress and sandals hoping the truckers didn’t mistake me for a "working girl". Oh yeah, it has to get better.
